If there is heaven on Earth, then it is in Srinagar. The summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir, Srinagar is an ideal place for holiday especially during the summers; however you can visit this place throughout the year as well. Srinagar is located in the western part of the Kashmir valley of Northern India. This hill station is visited by travelers from outside India as well. The flowing Jhelum River adds to the beauty and serenity of the city. History says that during 3rd century BC, Srinagar was a part on the Mauryan Empire. This city has been often termed as the Paradise on Earth. This hill resort is also well known for its gardens and lakes. The various tourist attractions make it worth visiting time and again. A couple of tourist sites, which you should not miss in Srinagar are Dal Lake, Shankaracharya Temple, Shalimar Bagh and many more. The important tourist destinations of Srinagar are discussed below:

Dal Lake at Srinagar, Kashmir, India

Dal Lake 8 km long and 4 km wide, the Dal Lake in Srinagar is one of the most important and beautiful tourist destinations in Srinagar. There are four other water bodies that surround the Dal Lake - Lokut Dal, Bod Dal, Gagribal and Nagin.  The beauty of its landscape with the show covered peaks make the lake look more beautiful.

Wular Lake   Wular Lake is one of the largest of its kind in Asia. Boating on this lake adds more excitement to your trip to Kashmir. Fishing in this lake is an important occupation here. With the availability of species such as Common carp, Rosy barb, Mosquitofish, Chirruh snowtrout and Chush snowtrout you will be spoilt for choices when it comes to fishing. 

Hazratbal Shrine   The relics of prophet Mohammad are kept at Hazratbal Shrine. This is a sacred pilgrimage center for the Muslims and is located by the bank of Dal Lake. The name, Hazratbal has been derived from an Arabic word Hazrat, which means holy. Shankaracharya Temple   This temple is located on Gopadari Hills and on the hill top called Takht-e-Suleiman over an altitude of 1100ft in the southeastern part of Srinagar. This temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva. It is considered to be one of the oldest shrines of  Kashmir Valley. You will have to trek to reach  the temple that was built by King Sandhiman, who belonged to the Gonanda dynasty. 

Khanqah-e-Molla It is believed that this shrine holds the secret of Allah and it is also famous by the name of Shah-e-Hamdan. Located by the bank of Jhelum, here you can see creative wooden architecture. This shrine was built in 1395 and till date is one of the most important tourist attractions in Srinagar. 

Jama Masjid Built by Sultan Sikandar in 1400 AD, Jama Masjid is located at Nowhatta. This mosque has been ruined by fire three times and reconstruction has been done as well. 370 wooden pillars and the courtyard make it a beautiful place to visit.
