Phodong Monastery Located 28 kms North of Sikkim, the Phodong Monastery is a must visit. Regarded as the most beautiful monastery of Sikkim, it has 260 monks and some old mural paintings. Mostly people come here during the festival time.
Rumtek Monastery Located 24 kms from Gangtok, the Rumtek monastery is an old monastery built in 1717. It was rebuilt by Gyalwa Karmapa in the year 1960 following the architectural designs of monasteries in Tibet,home to the Karmapa. The monastery is characterised by murals, Tibetan paintings, Tankhas and frescoes. It is the largest in Sikkim, sprawling over a wide area.
